Your questions answered!

Q: Who can take part?
A: Anyone who identifies as trans in any way, shape or size and wants to get into physical activity. Being trans can make accessing many sports very difficult. This project aims to help people get involved in exercise regardless of their fitness level.

Q: How is Trans Can Sport a safe space for their participants?

A: All of our team/instructors have had trans awareness training and all of our locations are in private local studios not large corporate gyms. The locations of sessions are never advertised and only disclosed to individuals who have booked onto the session. None of our sessions are drop in and only individuals who have booked in advance will be able to attend.

Q: How old do I need to be to participate?

A: Trans Can Sport sessions are currently for individuals 18 years and above, with the exception of Trans Can Play. Trans Can Play welcomes under 18s however they do need to be accompanied by an individual over 18.

Q: How can I register?

A: Register by emailing transcansport@gmail.com. We will reply with a health questionnaire for you to fill out. Once we receive your questionnaire, it will be reviewed and we will give you the go head to start booking sessions. Safety is paramount for all participants, so on occasions we may require a doctors note from your GP, before attending any of sessions.

Q: How will the sessions run?
A: Every session is run as a group with between 4 – 8 people and will last about an hour. Please arrive ready to start. You’ll be led by a fully qualified instructor. Everyone involved in the project are trans or allies. Our allies are trans aware.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: It depends on the activity. Many of our fitness activities have no cost and we request a donation if the participant is able to. Some of our workshops have a low cost at the point of access. See our activity schedule for the cost of current activities.  https://transcansport.wordpress.com/activity-schedule/

Q:How is Trans Can Sport Funded?

A: We mostly rely on funding and have received a grant from Sussex Community Fund and Brighton and Hove Council. We also receive donations from our participants.

Q: How can I donate?

A: We have a page set up on go fund me to raise funds. Our Trans can Run instructor is running Brighton Half Marathon on our behalf. Click the link to donate. https://www.gofundme.com/29ee8yk

Q: What kit do I need?
A: You need to wear suitable clothing for each activity. Aim for comfortable clothing that you won’t mind sweating in, like a t-shirt, shorts, sweat pants, etc. You’ll also need to wear trainers. All other kit like boxing gloves and free weights are provided.
Unless of course you’re swimming, in which case you’ll need to wear something that won’t weigh down with water.

Q: What are the facilities like?
A: We are using a private fitness studio to keep our sessions as intimate as possible. There is use of at least a single toilet and shower. In some of the facilities used there are mirrors on one side of the wall, which is there to ensure proper form is used.

Q: What if I have an injury or long term health condition?
A: Talk to us. It may be something we can work with and make adjustments for.

Q: Can I do more than one activity?
A: Depending on demand, yes. We want every session to be used. If we help one person get into sport, we’ll be pleased.
